Favorite Podcasts

As developers we often put on our headphones to escape distractions around us. When I need complete focus, I will normally put on some classical or oriental instrumental music, but I often listen to a podcast when I am doing some of those mundane tasks that do not require as much focus.

I have a few that help me stay up with current events related to the field and I often pick up tips and interesting topics that I jot down to research more in-depth later. They provide a great way to keep up with current tech news and learn tips and tricks from other developers. Lots of podcasts are popping up daily it seems.

Here are a few of my favorite.

Grumpy Old Geeks a weekly podcast about “What went wrong on the internet and who’s to blame”.

GoG is hosted by a couple of long time developers, Jason Defillippo and Brian Schulmeister, that cover current events related to the tech industry, and other geeky related topics. These guys provide information and give honest feedback related to it in an entertaining fashion.

I stumbled upon their show during an internet rabbit hole I went down and quickly found myself laughing and binge-watching episodes. I can relate to a lot of what these guys talk about. Now I count on their weekly episode release Monday mornings to start my week.

Warning – These guys do use strong language, so careful of your surroundings or if it bothers you.

Syntax “A Tasty Treats Podcast for Web Developers”.

Syntax is hosted by Wes Bos and Scott Tolinski. The show provides valuable advice and information from the well experienced web development hosts. While being relatively new, about a year, this show is quickly gaining an audience, and for good reason.

You can expect to find lots of tips about JavaScript, CSS, optimization, freelancing, and even ways to increase your productivity. They also cover questions provided by the listeners in their ‘potluck’ episodes.

If you’re into web development, this show is must add to your play list.

Swift by Sundell “The show that answers your questions about Swift development”

Hosted by John Sundell this podcast features specials guest as they discuss features and news regarding Swift development while answering questions from their viewers. I enjoy this show as the special guest co-hosts keep it fresh and provide different perspectives about Swift development. It is helpful to gain insight from multiple point of views.

John also provides a weekly blog about Swift development on his website https://www.swiftbysundell.com/

Coding Blocks

Hosted by Allen Underwood, Joe Zack, and Michael Outlaw. The show covers a lot of topics related to .net and coding best practices. A good number of shows covering design practices, architecture, advice and tips. I enjoyed a show they did about identifying strengths and weaknesses as programmers and could relate to a lot of their experiences.

With the amount of years of experience these guys have, everyone is sure to pick up on some good tips from them.

More Than Just Code “A show about mobile development (& for those of you driving at home.)”

Hosted by Jamie Lopez, Mark Rubin, and Tim Mitra.

This group discusses current events and news regarding iOS development, from all aspects. They touch not only on the technical side of development but also business side (hence the name) for developers. The show often features guest hosts and together the group has unique perspectives and views on the topics they cover.

Conclusion

We are fortunate with the number of good podcasts out there and the authors, with all their years of experience, willing to take the time to share what they have learned. Give them a listen and if you enjoy the content they produce give them a like and nice review as this goes a long way to help them out.

I hope you enjoyed the list.
